Three State Day!

Today we were in three states! We started off in Oklahoma, crossed the top of the Texas Panhandle and got into New Mexico. We fought high crosswinds for much of the way, making driving a little difficult. Every time we were passed by a big rig, the wind was cut and the motorhome turned hard to the right. I tried to keep one eye on the mirror to be prepared for being passed but I missed many of the rigs coming up on me.

We came to a casino where we tried to find refuge for the night but some construction was being done and the RV parking lot was closed, We carried on and decided to get an RV park in Santa Rosa, NM.

Route 66

As we were driving along I-40 we found some remaining sections of old Route 66 to drive along. It was a great feeling for me to be able to drive this great old road! I certainly got my kicks!

  1. Glad you're making progress on your trip home. It seems you've taken time to see a lot of sites on the way, too. Paul

I agree with you on taking the back roads. Another gem is the Lincoln Highway (aka US 30), which was the first transcontinental highway across America. Many of the towns on the route still have original buildings and sights. You can go to the Lincoln Highway Association website for maps and landmarks. A nice route if you ever get the chance to travel on it. At some point on this trip home you will likely cross it.

  4. I think at one point Oklahoma touches a total of 5 States (OK included) - did I read that somewhere?

Keep the rubber side down as we say in the motorcycle riding arena ;-)

  5. I drove through those winds last April, an it was WORK! Are you going up through NM? to Colorado? If you are, aside from Santa Fe and Taos, don't miss Chimayo. This restaurant in the town is a great experience-so pretty: http://www.ranchodechimayo.com/
Then, be sure to stop at El Santuario de Chimayo.

After that I went up through NM to Chama on a beautiful ride and on to Durango over 165, I think.

If you're not going up through NM, pardon the rambling.

  7. We had our own 3 state day today, as we left Vegas this morning, and touched the corner of Arizona again before stopping in the metropolis of Virgin Utah. The Zion/Bryce Canyon area is full of spectacular scenery if you get a chance to stop. We're heading north to hook up with Interstate 84 as we need to go through Eastern Oregon on the way home. I've put on long pants for the first time in a couple of months, and it doesn't feel that good let me tell you.

Take care and we'll see you in CR.
