I just got a letter from Revenue Canada or whatever they call themselves now informing me I am being audited for last year's taxes. At least the medical expense part. Norma had many thousands of dollars worth of dental work done which required several trips to Victoria to her specialist. His fees as well as all travel expenses for both of us are deductible. On top of this were glasses bought in Mexico and my drugs. We will have receipts for 95% of all this but some of my drugs bought in Mexico might be a problem. Small pharmacies do not give receipts and the drugs purchased in grocery store pharmacies are mixed up with the same receipt as the groceries and I know I did not save many (if any) of those.
We have 30 days to send in receipts. Crap!

Send them a note saying you're in Mexico and don't have access to your files. :-)

ReplyDeleteI got a letter like that the year I had big medical deductions for eligible cosmetic surgery. I just sent them all the paperwork the doctor gave me and that's all I never heard anything more about it. If your paperwork is even remotely in order, I wouldn't worry about it.
ReplyDeleteBig deductions always make a red flag for them. I'm sure if you explain you had the scripts done in mexico, they will be fine as long as you didn't deduct too much on that angle.
ReplyDeleteNot a big deal. I was asked about our daughter's university tuition that I claimed, sent the receipts, they stamped them and returned them. They seem to key on abnormal amounts and my feeling is if you E-file they will ask to look at them.

Bummer - lots of red tape - chasing down the bucks. Surely if you have 95% of the receipts they should cut you some slack on the small percentage unaccounted for - oh sure!

ReplyDeleteSend what you have with a note explaining that in Mexico receipts are not given. You may not be able to claim that portion but overall you will be fine.....not fined:)
ReplyDeleteIt's a pain in the you know what but then again, it is the government and it has the muscle to make lives miserable. And it seems to do that to its citizens from time to time.
